NIERKA choreography by Fernando Magadan / concept direction by Tupac Martir 14th/15th/16th Jan Peacock Theater
WORLD PREMIERE OF NIERKA BY TUPAC MARTIR AT THE PEACOCK THEATRE
January 2012, 14th-16th
A new fully-staged multidisciplinary work, created by visual designer Tupac Martir, will be premiered at the Peacock Theatre in January 2012. With music composed and performed by Austin TV and NSM PSM, and choreography by the Nederlands Dans Theater choreographer, Fernando Hernando Magadan, Nierka explores new ways of approaching theatre – using new technologies and more traditional concepts. Ideas from post modernism, avant-garde and expressionism merge with more modern trends to embrace the concept of a ‘painting in motion’.
Combining music (electronic, orchestra, post-rock and opera), contemporary dance, puppetry, video, lighting, old and new technologies, Tupac Martir presents a show which is not driven by one singular element. It is the chemistry of the different art forms that are being showcased at any given instant, which create a piece that has importance as a whole.
Influenced by Wassily Kandinsky’s The Yellow Sound, as well as Artaud and Craig’s philosophies of new trends for theatre, Nierka challenges the idea that only the new tools create new theatre. Instead, it proposes that old and new ideas can work together to create a unique spectator’s experience.
The project has already created great interest and Film director Alex Sufit and Editor Samantha Hermann are developing a documentary which portraits the different stages of the production, from the story behind the scenes to the live performance – a cross between Pina and an observational documentary style.
Satore Studio, in partnership with The Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama and other UK universities, will give the opportunity to 100 students to get involved in set and costume design, directing, stage management, audio, lighting and video design, as well as dance, music and production.
